A friend of mine recently overheard me telling a new knitter NOT to measure the needle when measuring her work's length. That's what I've always done. That makes this ribbing just under 1.75 inches long.
If you include the needle in the measurement, it would be just over 1.75 inches long.
Which way do you do it? It's a small difference in this case, but if you were using size 11 needles, it would not be a small difference!
If I'm on circular needles, I'll measure on the cord rather than on the needle.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise I tend to count about half to 2/3rds of the height of the needle - those stitches do add height, but not the full height of the needle since they're a big stretched compared to their final position.
I've never been told one way or another which to do, but I always include the needle as that is where the top of the fabric that has been knitting ends, with the stitch that is on the needle. That's always been my logic anyway. I may well be wrong.
ReplyDeleteWith the needle! It's a knitted row.
ReplyDeleteI've done both, but I remember reading a how-to-knit manual saying to move the stitches to a length of thread or a holder to measure so that the knitting could be laid flat... It's a hassle but I can see how that would make it more accurate and include the last row/round in the measuring. :/
